Summer Reading: The Apollo 13 Mission

Book Title: The Apollo 13 Mission

Author: Judy L. Hasday

Summary: Even if Apollo 11 had already reached the moon, Apollo 13 was also aiming to travel there. But it all changes as an explosion happens in the spacecraft. Liquid oxygen started to leak out and into space! Soon, they would be stranded 200,000 miles away from Earth. The three astronauts inside decided to move to the lunar module, even if it wasn't fit for an emergency like this. Problems start forming in the lunar module, such as the lack of space and carbon dioxide poisoning. Can they make it back to Earth in time before all of their supplies run out?

I like this book, because it actually shows the Apollo journeys before the disaster, too. Also, it is packed with suspense and adventure that increases, page by page.

I recommend this book for people who like science with suspense, and adventurous stories.

  1. This book reminds me of when we studied space engineering in G and T. We got to research active space missions like Curiosity.
I specifically researched about Apollo 13 and came across this book. It gave me great information that helped me ace the project.
An interesting fact that I learned was that Apollo 13 came back to Earth without landing on the moon, like it was supposed to. The crew had to work intensely to find a way to go back to Earth.

  2. The amazing thing about this story is that it was true. I wonder what it would have been like to watch this story unfold before the constant updates on computers, tablets and phones. For information, people were limited to television, radio and newspapers. I am also amazed at the ability of the astronauts and workers on the ground to find a solution to this problem so quickly.

If you are interested, they made a movie "Apollo 13" a while back. It contains a lot of the same suspense as the book.
